Recently reprinted, this true story tells how one man tried to save the takahe from extinction. In the 1950s Elwyn Welch hatched a clever plan to help breed takahe. Elwyn's farm later became Pukaha Mount Bruce, New Zealand's National Wildlife Centre. This charming story won the Mitre 10 Takahe Rescue short story competition.

Ali Foster works as a teacher aide and adult literacy tutor in Masterton. She has written three successful picture books with a Wairarapa flavour, including The Eels of Anzac Bridge, Fraser Books, 2012 and A beam of Bright Light - the journey of a lighthouse, Wai Art Press 2013. Viv Walker trained in graphic design at Norwich School of Art, England. Along with her illustration, she runs a design business and teaches art classes. Viv is the illustrator of all of Ali's books and is based in Carterton.
