Hoha te Taniwha is about a Taniwha who lives in a village on the shores of Lake Rotorua, he can do anything, stand on his head and catch plenty of fish but at night he snores very loudly and is kindly asked to leave the village .Hoha swims across to Mokoia Island and finds a cave, but he also angers the villagers there with his loud snoring and they throw kakahi at him and yell at him to go away. A little boy called Te Rake sneaks out of the village and says he will find a safe warm place for him to stay and he will be his friend. One night Hoha spies enemies approaching the island in their waka and roars and roars to warn the villagers of the approaching danger. Hoha becomes a hero. He is given a taonga and his own whare to live in and is never lonely again. There are 3 songs with the bilingual narration of this book.
